Autumn is a time of change, and with each passing day we’re inspired by the wonderful colours, textures and atmosphere that the season brings to us. It’s an ideal time to grab your camera and photograph the beauty all around you! Here are some of our favourite photo ideas to help you capture the essence of autumn.
Connecting with nature is a great way to make wonderful memories, and even something as simple as a walk in the woods can bring a wealth of wonderful photo opportunities. Photographing the family at play or your four legged friend frolicking through the leaves makes for engaging, dynamic shots with a personal touch. Study the silhouette of trees against the sky, as well as how light filters through the leaves to help take your shots to the next level.
Autumn mornings are unique and beautiful! From moody, misty scenes packed with atmosphere, to irresistibly crisp mornings with clear skies and vibrant colours, there’s plenty to get inspired with. Pick your location ahead of time and arrive before dawn to take advantage of the quickly changing light and any mist that might disperse later in the day. Its also a perfect time to practice shooting in low lighting conditions!
The nights are drawing in, and with them come some beautiful sunsets! Start shooting during the golden hour (the hour before sunset) and watch as the sky and light quality changes. The lower the sun is in the sky, the longer the shadows- perfect for using as leading lines in your photos for strong compositions. We also love how trees, plants, buildings and other objects appear when silhouetted against the sky. Experimenting will help you create the best shots.
For some, Autumn just wouldn’t be Autumn without Halloween! Get in on the festivities by photographing your favourite moments- pumpkin picking, apple bobbing, pumpkin carving and Halloween parties all make for a fun filled photoshoot to remember for years to come. Any trick or treaters in your family would love to have their costumes captured for posterity too!
With Halloween at the end of the month and Guy Fawkes Night a few days after, fireworks will be a regular fixture this season. It’s a great opportunity to capture the spectacular sight with your camera! Use a tripod and a low shutter speed to reduce blurriness, with as low an ISO as possible to reduce colour noise in your images. This is a great way to work on your timing too- blink and you’ll miss them, so be ready to shoot at just the right moment!
